good reference for command line usage of z7 and z7a. The other answers address other problems better I'm not going to try. It's not advisable to modify your system path for temproary "portable" drives though manualy do that by: a good path editor (down) usefull if you have lots of path information 20+ get's hard to read. You'll have to set your path when you hit the shell after making sure it's attached.

If you really want the portable app to contain that though you can always install the full version and pull the required 7z.exe out and put it into the portable folder making sure it's in with the required dll's. 2 The CMD tool for zip handling on newer Windows 10, thus I presume carried over to Win 11 is TAR, however it is not 'The one used by default in explorer', since that system inbuilt feature has been there, since I think, at least XP' see Tar -help To list use Tar -tf file.zip To extract use Tar -m -xf file. Typing that out for everything is why GUI's make sense with things like portable apps it (the app) can remember it's own location and handle that stuff for you and if you can't run it you know it's not attached.
If that requirement is not met using command line utilities is rather tedious.ĭ:\portable\z7\z7 -a c:\to\archive\folder*.* The reason people don't do much command line stuff in portable applications is that the OS (windows in your case) requires that executables be added to the %path% inclusion list. But allegedly Compress interferes with windowsupdate.I've not looked into this but shooting from the hip I'd say that they dropped command line support in the portable. In the best of worlds you can compress your Documents directory and %programfiles% to save disks space. Imagine compressing a database file? Great – it has to be unravelled and recompressed by Windows each time you make a record change.Īllegedly Compress works / (worked?) good with CAD programs where you have huge parts libraries with thousands of small component files.
#Zip command line windows 10 zip file
Windows compresses the files or folders, and a new ZIP file appears in the same location as the files you’re working with. You can also select multiple files or folders in Explorer, and then follow the same steps above to compress them simultaneously. The practical use of Compress is less nowadays as we collect lots of images and sound and these can’t be compacted more, and Compress is a tradeoff between process speed and file size. Click Send to, and then click Compressed (Zipped) Folder. And be aware that compaction ratios aren’t that impressive. It is possible to select so that compressed files show up in another colour in file explorer, for your convenience. And I don’t know if that Compression attribute follows along when that file is copied to another (NTFS) disk. Your Compressed file will only take less disk space when stored on that disk it was Compressed on. Because NTFS has the ability to do that, and FAT / FAT32 cannot. Please everybody, be aware that this Compact is a bit like the old Drivespace in DOS: it does NOT create a NEW file, like a zip file, but it stores the same file, or the whole directory, in a compressed manner. To un-compress all the files in the current directory and also in its sub directories: compact /u /s * To un-compress all the files in the current directory compact /u *
